Our Identity and Who We Really Are
Something to think about….
We color and shape our identity as a result of our experiences and emotions. Our identity becomes who we “think” or “believe” we are. We say things like “I am a rock climber”, “I am a yoga teacher”, “I am this and I am that”. This is what we identify ourselves with. and it’s necessary to have an identity, it is necessary to have some level of Ego.
But then what if we are like coins. Coins have two sides. Coins need both sides to be of full and total value. If a coin we possess has only markings on one side (a one sided coin), then that coin is of no value. When we attach ourselves so strongly to one identity, i.e. one side of the coin, what are we missing out on in life?
We buy things all the time right? Imagine now, only having one sided coins. We go to stores and pay with our one sided coins. And every time we pay, we “cleverly” (out of thinking we know exactly who we are and what we are doing in life), lay the coins we have on the cashiers counter with the side that has markings facing up. So we hide the other side “cleverly”. And we get away with that a lot of times, we don’t get caught and we feel good about ourselves. The cashiers in our life, often are unaware themselves and so they blindly accept our one-sided coins. We get away with a lot of things in life this way – by showing only one side of our coins. We get through life’s experiences this way a lot.
We keep paying with one-sided coins again and again, feeling good every time, UNTIL, one day, someone actually flips the coin we give them over and sees that the other side is blank. And that PERSON or LIFE throws the coin back at you and says, “this is no value to me” or “this coin doesn’t represent its full value or potential” or “You can’t pay with this! I’m not a fool!” Then suddenly we don’t feel good about who we are anymore. Why? Because someone or LIFE has discovered that we are only showing them that one side of the coin, of ourselves. And as if that isn’t enough, that person steps up and challenges us to reveal to ourselves and the World the other side to. They or life challenges us to do this because, only if both sides of our coins are fully marked will they have full value and potential. And with full potential we can be more, do more, and feel more.
And at that point, when we are challenged because someone or something in life has pointed out to us that we are not being our true and full selves, that we are not living from our fullest potential, we can take two paths. We can either take the path of trying to keep getting away with this and get through life’s experiences with only one-sided coins OR we can choose to take action and discover the other side or sides of ourselves. And that’s not all, because we can further choose to build up those other aspects or sides of ourselves so that we become more WHOLE. By being more whole, we are able to access greater resources already within us. We are able to help more people. We are able to be more and do more. We are able to feel even more. And most importantly, by being more whole and complete, we feel fulfilled even without doing anything more than we already are because we are being true to ourselves – we are not hiding anything any longer. How great would it be to live like that?
There are two paths – which one will you take?
